Transportation of ammunition and sport weapons
Very strict rules apply to the transport of ammunition and sports weapons by plane, but it is strictly forbidden to carry weapons in hand luggage. It is possible to transport sports weapons as checked baggage, but the permitted weight must be respected
What is a “weapon”?
In addition to firearms for hunting and sports, according to the rules of most airlines, weapons include components of firearms, crossbows, harpoons, signal pistols if they are starting pistols and discharged, catapults, small slingshots, arrows, bows, air pistols and carbon dioxide pistols.
If you are traveling with children, be careful not to put plastic pistols, replicas and imitation firearms in your hand luggage.
Explosives, explosive capsules, grenades, mines and other military devices, dynamite, gunpowder, plastic explosives, are not allowed to be brought in or handed over as hand luggage.
Other firearms and ammunition, other than those used for sports and hunting, may be carried as baggage. They need to be pre-registered as luggage, and weapons must be unloaded, locked and packed. Sporting and hunting weapons and ammunition may be accepted as checked baggage, provided that the weapons are unloaded, locked and packed. Ammunition is transported in accordance with special regulations.
The passenger must first have a permit to carry a weapon, then an export permit from the country the passenger is traveling to and an import permit from the country he is coming to. There are also special customs permits of the country where the weapon travels, and they must be respected.
Different countries and airlines have different rules when it comes to arms transfers. Some airlines do not transport sport weapons and ammunition at all.
Sports weapons also include accompanying sports equipment, and they are packaged in such a way that they are usually registered with airlines as special luggage on the plane.
All sports equipment is divided into three categories – small, medium, large. Dimensions and conditions vary from company to company, but usually small luggage can be transported within the free luggage limit, according to the valid tariff for its excess. Even some companies that have regular lines to ski resorts can provide free transportation of ski equipment.
When it comes to large sports equipment, some companies, due to the type of aircraft, do not offer the possibility of transferring equipment. In these cases, the equipment is handed over as (cargo) goods and is subject to cargo traffic regulations.
