Transportation of pets and other animals by plane
It is important to emphasize that each airline has a special price list for transport of pets and other animals. There are airlines that accept to transport a very few animal species, under strict rules. The first condition is that the airline allows the transport of the animal species you want to transport.
Most companies allow the following species for transport: parrots, dogs, cats. There are exceptions, so the airlines from the Emirates allow protected species of falcons that are used for competitions, guide dogs etc.
Usually, the transport of pets by plane can be done in the passenger cabin, together with the owner, which is a much more convenient option, but the pet must weigh up to 5 kg together with the cage, so this offer is reserved for smaller animals. Animals with a total weight of more than 8 kg, together with the weight of the cage or transporter, shall be put in a designated part of the airplane, provided for that purpose.
Without prior airline confirmation, a pet or other animal will not be accepted on the flight.
Only when you receive a confirmation from the airline that you plan a flight with the transport is possible; you must announce the transport of animals by plane, your animals are transported to the airport in the cage and then to the plane.
What if you don’t get a confirmation? Well, usually the reason for rejection may be the airlines’ policy that does not accept some animal species on the flight, or there is already a reservation for another type of animal of the same or different species. Also, two dogs of the same species or a dog and a cat in the cabin cannot be transported on the flight.
A passport for your pet is not enough
Your pet or other animal needs to have a passport to cross the border safely. However, a passport alone is not enough. It is previously necessary for the pet to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. For travels to European countries, in addition to the above, it is necessary to do a titer test in the veterinary clinic, which is recorded in the passport. Before traveling, you need to ask your veterinarian for a certificate of your pet’s health 24/48 hours before you start the journey.
Passengers are strongly advised to inform themselves about the conditions and price of transportation when they start planning a trip with a pet, because usually the price is crucial for that endeavor.
